Montecristo gives El Salvador a full personality change: cloud forest, mist, giant trees and temperatures that can drop to around 6°C. You trade tropical heat for orchids, cold mountain water and a protected forest landscape shared across the borders of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Bring a sweater and prepare to question your geographic assumptions.

WHY THIS DARE EXISTS?

Even the orchids have lore.

The Jardín de los Cien Años protects one of El Salvador’s most important orchid collections, with more than a hundred documented species inside Montecristo’s cloud forest. The park also became El Salvador’s first declared protected natural area, helping preserve an ecosystem that now forms part of the Trifinio landscape shared by three countries. Apparently even the plants here have better backstories than most people.

Itinerary

5:00 AM – Departure from San Salvador
8:00 AM – Arrival at Montecristo National Park entrance
9:00 AM – Arrival at Planes de Montecristo
9:20 AM – Begin hike toward Hondurita River through cloud forest trails
11:00 AM – Arrival at Hondurita River. Time to relax, swim, and enjoy the forest
12:00 PM – Return hike to Planes de Montecristo
1:00 PM – Free time for lunch
1:45 PM – Hike to the 100-Year Garden
2:25 PM – 4x4 descent to the main entrance
4:00 PM – Return to San Salvador
